7 warning signs your car battery is about to fail

Most car batteries don’t die without warning. They drop hints for weeks, and most of us ignore them until the morning the car won’t start. Here are the seven signs our technicians see most often across Canberra, and what each one means.

1. Slow, lazy cranking

If the engine turns over slower than usual, especially first thing in the morning, the battery is struggling to deliver enough power. It’s the most common early warning, and it usually gets worse as the weather cools.

2. Clicking when you turn the key

A rapid clicking sound with the dash lights on means there’s enough power to run the electronics but not enough to turn the starter motor. It can also point to a loose or corroded terminal, which is why we test before we replace anything.

3. Dim lights and a flickering dash

Headlights that look weaker than normal, a dash that flickers when you start the car, or a radio that resets itself are all signs the battery can’t hold a steady voltage.

4. The battery warning light is on

That little battery symbol is really a charging system light. It can mean the battery is failing, but it can also mean the alternator isn’t charging it. Read our guide on telling the battery and alternator apart before you buy anything.

5. A swollen case, leaks or a rotten-egg smell

A battery that has bulged, is leaking, or smells like rotten eggs has been damaged, often by heat or overcharging. It needs replacing, and it should be handled carefully.

Safety first

Never jump start a battery that is swollen, cracked or leaking. Keep sparks and flames away and call us instead.

6. Corrosion on the terminals

White, green or blue crust around the terminals blocks the flow of power. Sometimes a clean and re-tighten is all your car needs. Sometimes it’s a sign the battery is venting and near the end of its life.

7. It’s more than three years old

Most car batteries last around three to five years. Canberra’s hot summers wear them down and our frosty winters expose the damage, so if yours is over three years old it’s worth a quick test before winter.

What to do next

If you’ve noticed one or more of these signs, don’t wait for the battery to leave you stranded.

  • Book a free battery health check with any callout.
  • We test the battery, alternator and starter so you only fix what’s actually failed.
  • If you do need a new battery, we fit the right type on the spot and recycle the old one.
